Frequently asked

Tip log FAQ

Why should I keep a daily tip log at all?

Three reasons: the IRS expects tip records (and can reconstruct your income without them if you get audited), the new tip deduction (up to $25,000) is only as safe as the records behind it, and if you ever have a wage dispute, your log is evidence.

Is this the official IRS form?

No — and that matters. This is a TipToolbox record sheet that follows the same daily fields as IRS Form 4070A (cash tips, card tips, tips paid out). The official form is a free PDF on IRS.gov, linked below. Any complete daily record is acceptable; the official form is just one format.

What do I do with the log each month?

Report your total tips to your employer by the 10th of the following month (that’s the Form 4070 report) so they can withhold taxes properly. Keep the daily log for your own records.

Do I record the tips I pay out to bussers and the bar?

Yes — write down what you passed on and to whom. Tips you pay out are not your income, and the paper trail is what proves it.

Cash tips too, or just card tips?

Both. Card tips show up on payroll anyway; cash tips only exist in your log. A log with suspiciously zero cash tips is the classic audit flag.

Paper works. Your phone works better.

The log that fills itself in 30 seconds a day.

TipShield keeps the same records digitally — daily tips, hours, monthly totals ready for your employer report and your $25,000 deduction.
